Minimize Injection Bruising from Happening

How can you prevent and minimize injection bruises?

While we might not always prevent bruises we can take steps to minimize them.

At Rejuvent we recommend that all our patients follow these simple suggestions BEFORE filler injections.

  • Do not take any aspirin, ibuprofen or similar products (Advil, Motrin, Aleve) for 1 week prior to filler. If you are in pain you may take Tylenol.
  • Avoid fish oil, Vitamin E, and gingko biloba for 1 week prior to filler.
  • Eat spinach, kale, and celery the week before your injection appointment to boost your levels of Vitamin K.
  • Avoid eating apples or large quantities of garlic or fish before your appointment.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages 2 days prior to injections.
  • Apply VitaMedica Arnica + K Cream to areas most affecting by bruising (around the mouth and under the eyes) for several days before filler and Botox injections. This product contains Arnica and Vitamin K and is available for purchase at Rejuvent or at RejuventSkinCare.com.
  • Before filler or Botox apply Alastin Skin Nectar to prep the skin and strengthen it
  • (you can find Alastin products on sale at Rejuvent Skincare)

We recommend the following AFTER injections.

  • Apply ice immediately after filler, we will supply your first bag.
  • Cold gel packs are good too if the cool lasts for 20 minutes.
  • Continue to ice for swelling and soreness for as long as necessary – especially in the morning.
  • Take orally – VitaMedica Arnica and Bromelain (available at Rejuvent and RejuventSkinCare.com) which will help with swelling and bruising – take as long as these are a concern.
  • Apply VitaMedica Arnica and K Cream to areas that are bruised or swollen.
  • After injection apply Alastin INhance Serum to ensure faster healing
  • Try to avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hrs after injections.
  • Do not take any aspirin, ibuprofen or similar products (Advil, Motrin, Aleve) for 2 days after treatment. Tylenol is fine.
  • Always wear a sunscreen with antioxidants to protect the skin and prevent free radicals damage.

What if you do develop bruises?

  • Have a quick IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment on the bruise as it helps break up the bruise faster. This is a complimentary service included with filler injections at Rejuvent.
  • Use concealing make-up to cover the bruises. We recommend the Colorescience Corrector Pallete as it covers even the darkest bruises, including all the stages of healing. This product should be used with the Colorescience Hydrating Mist which adds moisture to the camouflaged area and sets the concealer for long-term wear throughout the day.

Why do patients bruise?

Bruising can happen to anyone, and with any injector. We see a variety of skin types, a variety of underlying facial structures, different degrees of skin aging and different thicknesses of skin and our doctors use a filler delivery system designed to cause less injury. Still, patients do sometimes bruise. A patient might not bruise today but might bruise on the next visit.

Because bruising is so unpredictable, we recommend patients to schedule their filler and Botox appointment accordingly and avoid injections around any important event.

I am thankful for the results

“I don’t always bruise but when I have an event to go, then I do. I also noticed that if I forget and take pain pills before my injections, I always bruise. I did learn that the Colorescience product to camouflage bruises work by layering. I start with the darkest color and keep on applying the colors until the bruise disappears. Learning this has helped me hide even the darkest bruise. I don’t like bruises but see that they are part of the process and I am thankful for the results.
